Marian Devotion in Carmel

Since our beginnings on Mount Carmel in the 13th century, Mary has held a place of honor in Carmelite life.  She is the “Lady of the Place,” our sister, companion and model of contemplative listening and openness.

We end our day by chanting one of the four great Marian Antiphons according to the liturgical season:

  • Alma Redemptoris Mater – Advent and Christmas
  • Ave Regina Caelorum – Lent
  • Regina Caeli Laetare – Easter
  • Salve Regina – Ordinary Time

On Saturday evening this ritual takes on added solemnity as we process through the chapel with lighted candles to the Icon of Our Lady of Mount Carmel where we chant the Solemn Salve.
